Our Story

A small object can change the way life feels.

At MiU Life, we create small handmade pieces — hand-carved wooden charms, wool felt animals, wooden keychains, bag pendants, and hanging ornaments — each one made to carry a little warmth, a quiet memory, and a gentle sense of good luck into everyday life.

Meet the Founder

Ella Hoshino, founder of MiU Life, in her handmade craft studio

My name is Ella Hoshino, and I started MiU Life from a very simple place — a deep love for small handmade objects and the quiet way they can make life feel more personal.

I grew up surrounded by handmade things. My grandmother kept a small carved wooden rabbit on her windowsill. My mother tied a tiny charm to her keys every year. These were not expensive objects. But they carried something — a feeling, a memory, a softness that mass-produced things rarely hold.

As I got older, I became drawn to Japanese craft aesthetics: the patience behind each piece, the respect for natural materials, the belief that even the smallest object deserves to be made with care. MiU Life began quietly — a few wooden animal figurines, a handful of wool felt charms — made with the belief that the right small object, placed in the right hands, can quietly change the way a day feels.

Our Wooden World

Our wooden pieces are hand-carved from natural linden wood and basswood — fine-grained, lightweight woods long favored in traditional Japanese carving for their smooth texture and ability to hold delicate detail. Each piece begins as a raw block of wood and is slowly shaped, refined, and brought to life entirely by hand.

Our wooden collection spans a wide world of characters and themes. Animals from around the world — bears, foxes, pandas, corgis, Shiba Inus, cats, owls, deer, capybaras, ducks, penguins, and more — sit alongside lucky symbols, zodiac figures, food-inspired charms, and seasonal pieces. Each one is designed to carry a quiet personality, a small story, and a gentle sense of good luck.

The pieces are made to live in real spaces: on a desk, along a shelf, hanging from a bag, swaying from a car mirror, or resting in the palm of a hand. They are small enough to go unnoticed — and meaningful enough that you always notice them.

What makes each wooden piece feel different from a souvenir or a toy is the intention behind it. Every character is designed with a specific feeling in mind — warmth, humor, calm, luck, or love. A tiny wooden lucky cat for someone starting something new. A hand-carved corgi for someone who misses their dog. A small wooden owl for someone who needs a little wisdom on their desk.

These are not decorations. They are small companions, made to be chosen, carried, and kept.

How Our Wooden Pieces Are Made

Every wooden piece begins as a sketch — a small character, a shape, an idea for something that might make someone smile or feel something quiet and good. Once the design is settled, we select a piece of natural linden wood or basswood and begin carving by hand, working slowly to shape the body, define the posture, and refine the surface.

After carving, each piece is carefully sanded by hand — first with coarser grain to smooth the surface, then with finer grain to bring out the natural warmth of the wood. This step takes time, but it is what gives each piece its soft, touchable quality.

Painting comes next. We mix colors by hand and apply them in layers, building up tone and depth gradually. Small details — eyes, patterns, tiny accessories, expressions — are added one by one with fine brushes. No two pieces are painted in exactly the same way.

Finally, each piece is assembled with its cord, chain, or hanging hardware, checked carefully for quality, and prepared for its new home. Because every piece is made by hand, small variations in carving texture, wood grain, or color tone are natural — and intentional. These differences are not imperfections. They are the signature of something made by a person, not a machine.

Our Wool Felt World

Our wool felt collection brings a completely different kind of warmth — soft, tactile, and gently alive in a way that only natural fiber can be. Where our wooden pieces carry the quiet strength of carved wood, our felt pieces carry the softness of something you want to hold in your hand and not put down.

Each wool felt piece features an animal character — lambs, cats, elephants, deer, horses, and more — often dressed in tiny knitted scarves, floral details, miniature bags, or seasonal accessories. The characters are designed to feel warm and personal, like something a friend might make for you by hand.

These pieces make beautiful bag charms, keychains, and small hanging ornaments. They are soft companions for everyday life — light enough to carry anywhere, meaningful enough to keep for a long time.

What makes our felt pieces special is the combination of softness and detail. From the tiny stitched expression on a lamb’s face to the miniature scarf wrapped around a deer’s neck, every small detail is added by hand, with care and patience. No two pieces are ever exactly alike.

They are the kind of thing you notice on someone’s bag and immediately want to know where it came from. Small, quiet, and completely handmade.

How Our Felt Pieces Are Made

Needle felting is one of the oldest and most meditative fiber crafts. It works by repeatedly pressing a barbed needle into loose wool fiber, tangling the fibers together until they hold their shape. There are no shortcuts. Each form is built up gradually, press by press, until the character emerges.

We begin with raw natural wool fiber, selecting colors and textures by hand before shaping begins. The body of each animal is formed first, then the limbs, then the smaller details — ears, tails, facial features, and accessories. Each element is attached and refined individually.

Finishing details like scarves, flowers, tiny bags, and expressions are added last, using fine needles and small pieces of contrasting wool. This is the slowest part of the process — and the most important. It is where each piece gets its personality.

Because every piece is made entirely by hand, small variations in shape, density, color, and texture are natural and expected. These are not flaws — they are what make each piece one of a kind. When you hold a MiU Life felt charm, you are holding something that no one else in the world has in exactly the same form.

Naturally Sourced. Ethically Made.

Ancient forest with naturally fallen trees — the ethical wood source for MiU Life carvings

At MiU Life, we believe that what our pieces are made from matters just as much as what they are made into. Every material we use is chosen with care — for the animals, for the forests, and for the people who will carry these pieces home.

🐑 Our Wool: Naturally Shed, Never Forced

All of the wool we use in our felt pieces comes from wool that has been naturally shed by sheep — collected during the animals’ natural shedding cycle, without any forced shearing or harm to the animal. We believe that beautiful things should not come at the cost of the creatures that help make them. Our wool is soft, warm, and gathered with care and deep respect for the animals it comes from.

🌳 Our Wood: Naturally Fallen, Never Cut

The linden wood and basswood we use in our carvings come exclusively from naturally aged, fallen, or deadwood sources — branches and trunks that have already completed their natural life cycle in the forest. We do not source wood from living trees, and we do not contribute to deforestation in any form. Every piece of wood we carve has already lived its life. We simply give it a new one — as a small handmade object that will be carried, kept, and loved.

💚 $2 Donated With Every Order

We give back with every purchase. For every order placed at MiU Life, we donate $2 to support environmental and animal welfare causes. When you buy a small handmade piece from us, you are also contributing to something larger — a quieter, kinder world for the animals and forests that inspire everything we make.

More Than Decoration

Our pieces are designed to live in real life — not behind glass, not on a shelf you never touch. They are made to be carried, hung, gifted, and kept close.

Hang a wooden charm from your car rearview mirror and let it catch the light on your morning commute. Clip a wool felt lamb to your bag and carry a little softness with you. Place a hand-carved wooden figurine on your desk and let it keep you quiet company through a long afternoon. Give a tiny wooden lucky cat to a friend starting something new.

Our pieces work as bag charms, keychains, car mirror hanging ornaments, wall ornaments, shelf decor, desk companions, and thoughtful handmade gifts. But more than their function, they are small carriers of feeling — warmth, memory, personality, and a quiet wish for good things.

Our Mission

“To preserve the spirit of traditional craftsmanship — and bring it into the small, everyday moments of modern life.”

We are a small studio. We do not make thousands of identical pieces. We make things slowly, carefully, and with the belief that the right small object — placed in the right hands — can quietly change the way a day feels. And we do it with materials that are kind to the animals and forests we love.

Find Your Small Companion

Whether you are looking for a small good luck charm, a meaningful handmade gift, a quiet companion for your daily routine, or simply something beautiful to carry — we hope you find it here.

Each piece is waiting to belong to someone. Perhaps it is already waiting for you.
